Laser Marking vs Dot Peen Marking — Which is More Durable?

One of the most common questions we receive at Instrumark is whether laser marking or dot peen marking produces more durable results. The answer depends on the material being marked, the environment the component operates in and the specific requirements of the application. Here's a detailed comparison.

How Each Technology Works

Dot peen marking uses a carbide stylus to physically indent the surface of the material creating a series of dots that form the required mark. The indentation is physically embedded in the material giving it inherent durability.

Laser marking uses a focused beam of light to interact with the surface of the material. Depending on the material and laser settings this can produce engraving, annealing, ablation or foaming — each creating a different type of permanent mark.

Durability on Steel and Stainless Steel

Both technologies produce highly durable marks on steel and stainless steel. Dot peen marks are deeply indented making them resistant to abrasion and surface wear. Laser annealing on stainless steel produces a colour change at the surface level which is extremely durable and corrosion resistant — making it the preferred choice for medical and food industry applications where surface integrity is critical.

Durability in Harsh Environments

For applications involving extreme heat, chemicals or abrasion, dot peen marking has a natural advantage. Because the mark is physically indented into the material it cannot be chemically etched away or worn off by abrasion alone. This makes dot peen the preferred choice for oil and gas pipelines, mining equipment and heavy engineering components.

Laser marks on some materials can be affected by prolonged exposure to certain chemicals or extreme abrasion — although on most metals laser marks are highly resistant to environmental degradation.

Durability on Hard Materials

For very hard materials such as hardened steel, carbide and tungsten, laser marking is significantly more durable than dot peen. A dot peen stylus cannot effectively mark surfaces harder than approximately 63 HRC whereas a laser can engrave virtually any material regardless of hardness. The resulting laser mark is permanent and highly durable.

Readability Over Time

Both technologies produce marks that remain readable over the lifetime of the component in most applications. Dot peen marks maintain their depth and readability even after surface treatment, painting or coating. Laser marks on metals are typically high contrast and remain readable even after exposure to heat and chemicals.

Which Should You Choose?

  • For most industrial metal marking → Dot peen offers excellent durability at a lower cost

  • For very hard materialsLaser marking machines are the only viable option

  • For medical and food applications → Laser annealing on stainless steel is preferred for hygiene reasons

  • For plastic and non-metal surfaces → Laser marking is generally more suitable
